And the children came to us saying, "Santa Claus is dead" and we reply, "He
is very real for us" seems to help.

Grades k-5 innercity

Also, a few weeks ago , the young students worked on snow creatures in
clay---based on snowballs......The older ones worked on two triangles united
{evergreen trees)....bisque fired and we paint them during the last week of
classes before vacation.

I provide colored newsprint so they can wrap--either as protection or as a

I bring buckets of cedar and holly and they rub their own Evergreen trees and
wreaths---decorating according to their family traditions, and I provide my
own traditions so they can share also. My students who are Jehova Witnesses
and other religions will do trees for birds in winter and load them with food

Over the years, more than one family has said it was their Christmas tree.
And all the wreaths get hung.....

They also have a chance to use a few stamps to do repetitious designs on the
wrapping paper---if the class has been working hard as they finish I'm often
able to pull a few and have them work on that in a corner----

Nutcrackers----have wonderful visuals, the music, and I cut white drawing
paper long and thin. I fold it in thirds---------then top section they draw
and oval. Middle section gets a wide rectangle and two thin ones for arms.
The bottom section is the letter W---very, very long and skinny---these are
the legs and high boots------And details ---as much as I can get
in........Start with one color for drawing only, so the missiles don't fly too

Keep a sense of humor, sing to them when I want them to do something other
than argue.........
