Expelling special ed students takes permission from God, the Pope,
Congress, and who knows who else? Thank the Americans With Disabilities
Act, which disallows expulsion for any reason of anyone who has a
handicapping code.
Home instruction is not considered a comparable education.
Wonderful,isn't it?
We have to pay closer attention to what our lawmakers--and vocal
special interest groups, are doing to our children. I'm sure their
intentions were good--but we all know where good intentions lead.
We are raising kids with no sense of the cause/effect relationship of
actions and consequences. Somehow, we have to provide that foundation.
We also need to teach empathy. I 'm convinced that we aren't born
with a natural instinct to crawl inside someone else's skin.
Adults--ideally, parents--pass the ability to empathize to the next
generation by example and active teaching.
Once again, schools get the job by default. There is so much more, but
I'm getting a rash just thinking about it.
I do hope the kids get a meaningful consequence. It hurts to think of
the lives they've been handed, but it is within everyone's power to
control thier own behavior. When they understand and believe that,
they'll be on the high road.
