Today in my 5th grade art class we were working on grids and making a
christmas picture. One of the boys in class had been kicked out of the
charter school for threating a student, and he is here in this school.
Some of the boys came to me during class telling me that this boy had
been threating them with a big safety pin. I took the boy into the hall
and asked to see the pin and if he was threating them. He said yes and
gave me the pin. This was a HUGE safety pin, kinda like those big paper
clips that you use to clip alot of papers together. I just couldn't
believe it. When opened it certainly could be used for a weapon. I
immediately took him and the pin to the office and told the principal
and went back to a new class. Over the intercom, the principal asked me
to come to the office. When I got there, the classroom teacher was
there, along with the counselor, principal, mother and kid and district
policeman. The policeman told him that this would be considered a
weapon. I must have been in there for 30 minutes, with everyone. The
principal told him our district has a zero policy for weapons of any
sort and expelled him for 5 days.
Toward the end of the day one of the special ed. kids threatened one of
his classmates and said he would bring IT to school tomorrow. The
principal sent the child with the district policeman home to talk with
It was a crazy day, and this is just elementary. Can't imagine what is
going on at the Junior High. This time of year seems to be bringing out
the bad instead of the good in our children. They are all wound up,
talking, and forget about trying to teach them something.
How are the children in your district this week??
