After you're done drawing old shoes, take a look at this page--and scroll
down to the running shoe design.

Lots of other ideas here too. If flowers (real or artificial) aren't your
thing, try using the design principles as paper sculpture, collage, or
directed drawing exercises( "draw a flat container; sketch a tall, skinny
foliage at the left, etc...")
