With my first graders I did a step by step landscape to teach them about fore,
middle and background. This preparatory lesson was taught by using visuals
and the actual space of the room. The demo also took them through landscapes
(plus great discussions on all the other scapes there are to draw) and the
wonderfully textural moving skies and fields of van Gogh. We studied his
short, long, curving, dotted, layed...etc. marks of color. The children could
then embellish their preliminary sketch with more details and add any mood to
the sky they desired. The final project was to then translate this learning
into a drawing of the front of the school showing the appropriate ground areas
and rich colors of the day...hot yellow reflections of the bright sun mingled
with the gusty/curving lines of the wind.
