In a chance to think through what I said:
I like the idea of competition amongst students within a school or district.
Competition is healthy. The contest is for the students and not for a
buisness.
The drunk driving contest was the most recent to come to mind, and I felt it
was a downer of a topic for kids to draw, another teacher said she was
bombarded with sad stories. Who needs that. That is not how I fashion my art
program. I like a contemporary pop art type upbeat type of program. As far as
AA is concerned I know they do a lot of hard work and I have close friends
whose lives were saved by AA, my comment was in no way meant as a knock on AA.
A year ago there was a contest about the town I live in, kids drew what made
our town great, so local real estate people could use them to cover the
windows in a large vacant store in town. Things like this turn me off, and
also because the real estate guy was a personal friend of the superintendent.
All the principals were asked to push this heavy.
