Egg Tempera and Plaster

I have been using plaster I buy at a hardware store to paint my tempera on.
The results have been good, but I am wondering what effects it will have
on the painting over time. I've tried rabbit-skin-glue gesso, but it
doesn't absorb the tempera as well as the plaster does. I am worried that
the plaster will crack, or not hold up over time.
Does anyone know about plaster's durability over time, or a better plaster
to use?

Thanks
