I have a simular problem, but also with the teachers. Not all, but some feel
that it is just a baby sitting service, that they do enough art in the
classroom. That art isn't academic.
I also teach weaving at one or two schools, and I had one child come to me a
while ago who said that his father told him that weaving was for girls. I
asked him where his father was born ( Mexico) and then told him that in
Mexico it's often the men that do the weaving and the women that spin and
dye the wool. So he looked at me and said " Do you mean it's ok? I can
weave?" with a big smile.
