It's fun to add holiday door decorating to what we do in art. There's
five of us at my high school, and we are just of few of the many teachers
who have their classes decorating doors for a pizza and coca-cola
party. This year my students are doing a take-off on Magritte's "Golconde"
with Santas and clouds. This was after exploring many artistic styles.
Another art teacher is having her students weave together sections of a
grid done with different media.

As art teachers we will invariably be asked to assist in 'holiday
decorations'. This year we were required to have 'every' student create
an entry into a Christmas card contest. The door decorating was/is our
choice, the card contest was not. When the holiday and how it is
represented is something I choose to incorporate into my curriculum, then
it's fine with me. When it is dictated from elsewhere, I, as others
would, resent it.
