Hi Lisa, I liked your lesson plan very much except as I said before
birdhouses are difficult for kids to build without a lot of woodshop
experience and adult assistance. That said, I remembered years ago doing
handbuilt clay (coil and slab techniques) birdhouses with kids which were
much easier than carpentry. I bisq fired them then we fired them buried in
a barrel of sawdust, so they came out mottled and smoky and natural
looking. They won't last a really long time outdoors because the soft clay
absorbes moisture and cracks when it freezes, but might make a few years.
The biggest problem we had was mothers who liked the birdhouses so much
they didn't want to put them outdoors!---Lynne
