Kids who finish assignments early

I have finally decided that when I have a major project, that the kids who
want to take their time and do their best deserve that opportunity. So I
add extra variations of the assignment for those who finish early. I tell
them that since I provide the classtime for them to work, that I expect
them to be working while in class - therefore either they take more time on
the original assignment, or they have a choice of which variations to do.
No one is actually doing any more work than anyone else - but the speedy
ones will have several grades while the kids who take their time will have
a single grade for the project. And there are actually a few whose
lightbulb turns on and they realize that if they take more time and put
more effort into the main assignment, they won't have to do variations.
