I am a dance educator in Atlanta, GA. In Atlanta, we are fortunate to have a
Dance Artist/Choreographer/Educator named Terrie Axam. Terrie is an Atlanta
Native who has spent over a decade developing an unique dance technique
called Moja. This form has developed from a lifetime of study and is
influenced by Horton, Dunham, and Traditional African Dance. Terrie
choreographs dances that express the connection between African American and
African culture. Her evening length works such as WOMEN HOLD UP HALF THE SKY
and THE THIRD GIFT have deeply touched the Atlanta community and have been
performed as far away as China. She maintains an organization that welcomes
people of all ethnicity and reaches people through educational as well as
performance venues. As someone who studied closely with great artists like
Katherine Dunham, performed with famous companies like Dance Theatre of
Harlem, and went on to develop a successful dance organization and company
that educates and communicates through wonderful artistry, I believe that
Terrie's insights and accomplishments as a dance artist and educator would
certainly help other arts educators and would be a wonderful example of
artistic contribution to the 20th century in general but as an African
American artist she specifically meets the profile for you project.
