Add one more African American Photographer to the list: Carrie
Mae Weems. She was one of the featured artists in a video
series (1992) called Behind the Scenes. The video is available
from GPN in Lincoln, Nebraska (1-800-228-4630). I purchased the
5 visual arts titles, but particularly like the one titled
Depth which features David Hockney. Comedian/Illusionists Penn
and Teller narrate the series and my fourth graders enjoy and
learn from this video. There are also music and dance titles.
My recent "must have" book is Cathy Weisman Topal's
CHILDREN AND PAINTING (1992) from Davis Publications in
Worcester, Massachusetts. This book is most appropriate for
teachers of elementary and middle school age children. I have
shared it with my recent student teachers and they seemed to
find it clear and useful for first year teachers. I found Ms. Topal's
ideas well organized into progressions of skills, media, and themes.
