Choices in Art

I am a High School Art teacher in Bristol, Va and am wondering
about some of your thoughts about what makes up a good program
for High School Students. My students have had no art in
elementary school and a minimal amount in Middle School. Many
only take Art I for a fine arts credit. Many are not
academically inspired. some take art seriously for several
My question is: What are my priorities? I have incorporated
DBAE to some extent in many of my plans, but trying to teach
technique, history, and aesthetics in a sequential manner is
difficult. sometimes I feel that I am crowding out the creative
force that happens by accident sometimes when things aren't as
structured. I vasilate between the two notions. Any suggestions?
