[teacherartexchange] Question about grading

Hi guys,
The second term is already over, and I've been busting my butt to try to get
these grades in. It is a nightmare. I've been preparing for the last two
weeks, and I still find myself staying at work until 8pm! I'm just wondering how
you guys grade?

My middle school is pretty cut and dry. They have deadlines, and if the work
is not in now, it's simply too late.

Elementary is much harder. I see them only once a week. How do you guys
make sure the students get their work in. With the elementary, I've pretty much
allowed them to turn in the work when they are done, but I find that they
start new projects rather than finishing old ones. It's hard because I don't see
them that often, and the hurricanes really did mess things up. After looking
through some portfolios today, I noticed that some kids had hardly any work to
show for the whole term! I wonder what they were doing all day in my class.
How do you guys grade the work? Are you strict, or do you give out all As
and Bs? How do you make sure the students turn in the work well before grades
are due? It's been so hard because I have 16 classes a week and almost 400
students. It's hard to keep track of every student and grades, not to mention
behavior grades! Any tips on how to make grading easier and less work when
report card time comes around?

Thanks a bunch!

Stacie
