I think a lot of the problem is the cheap and shoddy materials the kids use.
I invested in Prang's pressed crayons last year, they don't flake like molded
crayons do and will color on black.
When I put out the regular crayons for 'free time' the kids now choose the
colored pencils. Then of course, there are colored pencils and colored
pencils...
