Re: Independent students

I have had students take independent study for credit- I call it Art 6-IS.
I write up a contract which they sign, their parent signs, the principal
signs and I sign. It states the parameters the students must follow in order
to recieve a grade (or credit only- I have done this both ways). Basically
it states the student will complete three works of art each quarter of which
one of them will be matted and framed. Quarter project proposals are
required by the second week of class beginning each quarter. Each proposal
states the project, student objective(s) and list 5 criteria in which they
would like me to grade their work. Each criteria is worth 2 pts then
multiplied by the number of weeks expected the child takes to complete it. I
have a list of grading criteria that they could choose from if they want.
I review it and make any adjustments, approve and give them a copy for their
reference. Meetings for "in process" review/problems occuring with their
work are expected to take place no less than every 2 weeks . All borrowed
"non-consumable" materials must be returned in good working order or credit
will not be issued. Needed materials but not stocked by CHS are the
responsibility of the student. If you have questions, let me know. If it is
a seniors last art class, I allow them to have an opening exhibition of
their work as one of their project.s Here they have to develop a theme,
design the invites, and lables for their work, mat and frame their art and
have some type of finger food for the guests. One student worked it in with
her graduation party and even sold a few pieces from it. Only those students
requiring a "Grade" as opposed to credit are required to write a final paper
which offers a reflection of the course and each project.
