A resource for a drawing is a good thing. Not many people can draw from
memory especially if you want your drawing to look better than your third
grade version of your house and family. If the resource can help with
structure and proportion, then why not? When a student is trying to learn a
media as well as a subject, they need the resource of pictures to give them a
way to see form and texture as well as lighting on a subject. I would
suspect that most artists today use resources if they are drawing things
realistically especially those with photorealistic works.

Still life work and drawing from observation to put together a composition is
still a resource. It is what the student does with the resource that can
make it their own creation. Taking things out adding values and background
not to mention complete abstractions from using a photo resource will be the
students creative input and not just a reproduction of the source picture.

I do a weave drawing in which they use photo resources and then they abstract
it with weaving strips of each picture together and then enlarging from that
resource. The resource became the creative part of the picture and the
drawing just validates it.

I will continue to use photo resource as a teaching tool as well as other
methods. I believe that if you want to teach kids how to observe and see the
things that make things look real they have to see it first and then work
from it.

p.s. I just finished my book with slides tonight and I am feeling very happy.
 It was a lot of work and it will go to the publisher Tuesday. My friend Bob
Capitolo and myself wrote a book about 7 drawing techniques and it is a
progressive drawing course that starts with composition and a history of
materials and then seven drawing skills and techniques. The skills involved
are graphite, crosshatching, ink drawing, weave drawing with graphite,
gessoed textured drawing, scratch board and charcoal on toned paper for
portraits. It was supposed to be written for the general public but since
Bob and I have been teaching for 32 years plus, it is like a lesson plan. I
think it will be purchased by teachers for the most part. I'm glad it is
over. Our next one is due in April.
