I have my 4th -8th graders work in a sketchbook at the beginning of every
class and I give them a daily prompt. Sometimes I put a reproduction in the
front of the room and ask them to write about it. It can be pretty amazing
what they come up with, even the 4th graders. I just started this job this
fall and my hope is that if I continue to do this, by the time this year's
4th graders are in the 8th grade maybe they will be able to write well bout
I think that writing about it makes them think harder because in a class
discussion the "usual cast of characters" are almost always the ones who have
something to say.
Could you ask the teachers for something that they are currently
working on in class such as a story or social studies theme and devise
something around that?
