Bunki,
A book called, "Paint Your Own Illuminated Letters," by Stefan Oliver has
information about the history of illumination. (available from Amazon for
$12.99) It includes step-by step directions for projects such as
ninth century "M"
11th century Spanish "A"
12th century German "S"
11th century Dutch "R"
15th century Border
and so on.
It includes information on heraldry and symbolism of flowers.
I puchased it at a recent Getty museum exhibition on illuminated books.
