Hi Wayne,
We've made jewelry with clay beads
macramae
handmade paper
telephone wire-wrapped, coiled, twisted,linked
wrapped stones-polished ones available from Steins for stone gardens
wrapped candleholders with scrounged beads were a real winner with all HS
students. Used stove wire-18 and 20 gauge with pliers to wrap and scroll the
wire-can ger some real decorative effects,
Pewter casting into plaster molds or even tinfoil molds sprayed with pam. Use
a propane or Mapp gas torch. Kids go gaga when you allow them to use fire-(of
course withe the proper supervision and education)
Sculpey is another biggie---so many different ways of working with this clay
Wood scrap can be gorgeous when polished to a bright shine with shoepolish
and car wax.
Simple forms can be made with copper foil.
I beg a lot. Have a bead box that I gleaned from teaching Elementary art. If
you ask, someone always is ready to give you old necklaces to cut apart.
These have a miriad of uses. These are just a few of the ideas I've done over
the years before I had the equipment to teach metalsmithing. I've always had
my students make a display card to put their finished piece on, as if
displaying in a store case. Gives a real professional look.
