My Art 3's just finished illuminated letters. We made "parchment paper" the
following way:
1. Crumple heavyweight drawing paper into a ball. Open and crumple once more.
2. Smooth out flat as you can.
3. Make a light, yellow-ochre watercolor wash and apply to one side of the
paper.
It will be darker in the cracks of the paper.
4. Let dry. Then iron flat between 2 pieces of newsprint paper (not
newspaper).
5. Lightly draw the letter and flourishes with pencil to use as a guide.
6. Apply a light wash of vermilion (red) watercolor to the letter portion. Do
no use very wet paint as it will bleed into the cracks.
7. Paint over the red with metallic gold acrylic. I love DecoArt's Emperor's
Gold.
8. Outline the letter with permanent fine marker and also outline all swags,
flourishes and whatever details there are.
9. Add watercolor washes to the open spaces in the flourishes. I encouraged
them allow the watercolors to bleed into each other for a variegated look.

They were beautiful. Wish you could see.
