Your questions are realistic. To teach in the inner
schools is a challenge beyond the scope that I think
most of us realize. It is only getting worse. In my
district teachers that teach in the inner schools are
compensated with 'combat pay'. Interesting phrase.
How many of us can remain in combat for 30 years? Not
too many. I have taught in the inner city schools at
elementary level but only during the summer months.
This was all that I could handle. I get very emotional
and too caught up in the lives of these horrible
situations of these children. Yes, we can apply
techniques to relieve stress when we leave the
enviornment and go home to our safe haven and it is
very necesary but our schools are so ill equipped to
handle the magnitude of what is happening to these
children. The questions you ask are only for you to
answer. What can you handle and what do you what to
handle? Life is short. You can give, give, give but
remember in this situation the rewards can be
large...one child that clicks...but then the rewards
may be far and few between. Have you talked with other
art teachers in your district in the inner city
schools? Is there a support system set up for teachers
in your situation? It is imperative that all inner
city schools have a strong supportive
administration..if not...it is not worth it..you can't
fight two battles. I don't really have an answer...I
wish I did..just putting my two cents in. Teaching is
not easy in our culture. Sure...education is given
plenty of lip service but in reality we all know the
follow through hardly exists. THe problems are
increasing day by day. With this in mind..we add the
extreme situations of inner city life. It is alot to
demand from our teachers. I commend and highly respect
you for teaching in the inner city for such a long
period of time. It takes courage, strength, stamina
and will power.If you make the decision to stay or
leave..more power to you.
