Jackie...
I too am developing my curriculum for a strong (hopefully)department- I
currently have two sections of Art 1 in a 80 min. block schedule for 9 weeks.
I have one "advanced art" section for 80 min- for each 18 week quarter. I
only focus on technical context critiques (E&P) with my art 1 students. The
social and personal contexts are covered in Advanced Art. Unfortunately my
art 1 classes are HUGE because of the amount of students taking it for an
"easy credit". Because of this -many do not take my requirements seriously
therefor do poorly in my class. This is where I weed out those who are not
serious about art as a career. I have a lot to cover in 9 weeks to prepare
those students who move on to art 2.
If you are considering this critique process for your advanced
students - let me know. I think it would be wonderful for my students to
broaden their horizons in corresponding with other students with similar
goals yet different outlooks and culturral influences. This is really a
great idea and I think I will work on this concept over the summer in order
to impliment it next year in my advanced art curriculum.
