I also just finished a portrait of students done with the help of digital
images that were heightened for contrast. I don't have photoshop and its
filters but the dig. camera came with a hokey little program by Adobe and
it does have a place to crop, go to black and while and adjust contrast
and brightness.
I had the kids draw the image and then paint Rennaisance style using first
only burnt umber and water to copy the value patterns. Then they added
color in light washes (we used acrylic). Some came out great, but the
greatest flaw was that they lost some of the super dramatic value studies
when they started covering all the light values with color washes. I
think they learned something--at least that value is the structure of the
painting. Sid
