How wonderful to get a free human skull! I've had my 7th graders draw skulls
for at least 15 years now. They love the subject matter. I've got 8 casts,
2-3 students to a cast, and we make many drawings in preparation for drawing
self-portraits. I start it like a science lesson and have students find on
their own skulls the parts that I bring their attention to on a cast. They
also learn the names of some of the bones. We also look at skull images
across many cultures and how they're used. The issue of satanism has never
come up, so it's a non-issue in my school. Plus, the student drawings are
terrific. On my soon-to-be-on-line school Web site, I devoted a page to this
lesson and included a few student examples. I'll let you know when it's
on-line.
