Hi, just my two cents here. I am a lurker and a newbie hs art teacher(just have time for the digest). I too have many very "tight" emerging artists, and I let my students paint in their "own" style (whatever that is this week). BUT, I make sure that they select (objects to render) purposefully and meaningfully. They must also do a thumbnail sketch and clear it with me. In that discussion we talk about compositional choices ala the elements and principles. I will not let them paint or draw just any old thing "because it's there" and then just stop because they "ran out of paper". I stress composition and prior planning, then they can render it in whatever "style" they feel comfortable with. Respectfully and with much thanks for all of the great ideas and advice, Ann Hamil
