Hello,
I always have the students line the bowl with torn strips of newspaper and a rubber band wrapped around the edge to hold the paper strips in place. Folding the end or using the fold in the newspaper acts as a hook for the edge of the bowl. Hairnets also make wonderful liners for the elastic band grips the edge of the bowl and keeps it from sliding all around. You may need to use two per student but they can be used a couple of times. Also old drier sheets make wonderful liners. The hair net and drier sheets are soft enough that they don't mar the surface of the bowl.
On scoring and slipping, I have the students score and slip the first coil and but wield the proceeding coils. You might also try old toothbrushes. Just dip them in water and run them over the bottom coil to moisten the clay a break up the surface then wield the coils together. Now I mustsayI teach high school so I don't know how difficult these suggestions well translate to elementary.
Blessings
Joe.
