I wonder if we, in our anxiety to promote "self-esteem," have trained
young people over the years to believe that anything they produce is
okay. Occasionally I have to tell a student privately that their
self-esteem is something THEY have to work on--that's why it's called
SELF-esteem--and that most people find gratification in tackling
something challenging and doing their best.
