RE: Art School Portfolios

...I am just amazed at the amount of AP courses offered in high school,
they just keep being created and created...

My state pays for the AP exams, so it is free for my kids. We raffle
student art to pay for film, slides, and dupes. As a culmination to having
had art throughout high school, doing AP is a reward, but also a very
demanding endeavor. Our school's state ranking is impacted by students who
make 3,4, or 5 on the tests. Our students have weighted GPAs with AP grades
counting 10% more. In the last four years I have had the Valedictorian in
advanced art classes, so getting AP credit is important to them. My
students who are at RISD and Cal Arts use the AP credit on their resumes for
scholarships. They know, however, that the foundation courses at a good
school are wonderful and never intended to exempt. Those students who
aren't pursuing a career in art do use the exemption credit at state
universities and, if they want to take art for elective credit, having the
AP credit and the portfolio to show ability is a great help.
