For picking the artists talk to the teachers and see what artists they
know something about or would like to think about.
Please don't think of it as them using up artists. Be glad you have
teachers that see art as a positive force in education. How ever far
they go with the artists there will always be something additional for
you to add. Sorry if that sounds harsh but it is a Pet Peeve of mine.
Some of the other GT cluster teachers were complaining that the grade
lower teacher had "stolen" their project or lesson. They tried to draw
me in, I told them, "Teach those kids the curriculum, after they have
the basics take them as far as you can every year and when they get to
me I'll pick up were you left off and go as far as I can! Just make
sure they can save a blasted file to a floppy disk (long story) If the
teachers on the 6th grade campus have a problem with it they can come
complain to me"

Subject: Lessons based on artist's styles
The 1st and 2nd grade teachers asked me today to
assist them with a month-long unit they are doing as
a rotation on artists next month in their rooms.
They are each choosing an artist and doing a project
(45 min. but could be more than one day) on an artist,
and would like to do different media for each class...
one teacher has chosen Georgia O'Keeffe and the others
are looking to me for advice. These are all projects that
would have to be done in their classrooms with around
100 kids all in all. And, they'd love it if I could tie into this
theme some way as well, either with the same artists or
different ones.
(I must say, that as a first year teacher it's a little
frustrating to know that I can't, for instance, do a unit
on Van Gogh because one of the classes in that
grade level has already "done" Van Gogh... [and I mean
real sunflowers, science of flowers, all the picture books
available and studied his life story and all the art prints we have
in the school, and gorgeous artwork in his style hanging
in the classroom...] now they're gonna use up five more artists
and techniques I could definitely use in the artroom, and down
the hall the 3rd grade is now doing Starry Night! What's an art
teacher to do??? (I'm only half-kidding!)
Thanks for any advice or references! ---
