A note to consider.
Plaster contains lime and shouldn't come in direct contact with the face.
Students can develop skin allegeries from this. Keep the activity but
explore other mediums. For example, I use dental laytex. This can be otained
from dental suppliers. This is an organic mixture and can be poured directly
on to the face. It sets in lest than 2 minutes. And is completely safe -
especially as dentist use it in your mouth! A support mould is made with
dental plaster (a stronger and faster setting plaster that casting plaster,
i.e. plaster of paris). This is poured onto the laytex and sets in 5 - 10
minutes. Naturally during this process the student has straw in their nose
to breath - I have found that the large straws from the fast food outlets
work the best rather than the smaller dosemtic ones. This is then lifted off
the face and plaster is poured into the mould - and another added benefit is
that if your careful you can make more than one caste and the laytex
tolerates all of the undercuts of the face.

The caste can then be use as moulds to make masks or painted on. This allows
for may creative possibilities and during the whole process the students
have not had plaster come in contact with their face!

Re: Vaseline - avoid it its horrible stuff - petroleum base - use barrier
cream, you can pick it up from most pharmaceys. Has a consistency and smell
like suntan lotion and is far easier to wash off!!!!!!!! - especially in
hair.
