terra cotta finish?

Using terra cotta for large portrait jars in ceramics class. Is there some
kind of natural looking (and not expensive) finish that could be used on the
bisque fired pots that will solve them looking so "ashy," as my students say,
and make a second firing unnecessary? There must be something to just rub
in? I appreciate your expertise and advice. Melissa Smith
