re: May I TEACH, please?

Whenever I get these types of things, I try to build a lesson
around it. For example, we have to do the "anti drug" posters
at my school. I turn it back to the classroom teachers by doing
a lesson on good poster design (lettering, spacing, grabbing
attention, etc) and let them do their sketch/layout on scratch
paper. I send them back to class with their sketch and a
posterboard. The classroom teachers have more time that is
"free" (NOT to say they don't do stuff, just that there are
always fast finishers in class) and they can squeeze it in. I
tell them that I can't take 4 weeks out of my 1x per week
schedule to let them finish and do a good job. When I word it
like this, they understand, because they want the kids in their
class to be recognized for their work.
As for centerpieces, etc, I try to have a small area set up
for kids who finish early or who want to come in before/after
school to work on them. We have several teachers kids who are
always around to help out. Since this type of work is not
credited to the student, I don't feel bad about not letting
