DISCONTINUITY

Or: "What happens when the lights go off."

There are the dinosaurs who tend to remember too much, and then there =
are the neophytes that have experienced too little - will ever the twain =
meet? Much of what is old is new again, and what is new soon becomes =
yesterday's e-mail.

Education is like that. What ever happened to "Modern Math"? Does anyone =
remember "Audiovisual 101" where teacher candidates were instructed on =
how to thread a 16mm projector, and to make "glass" slides from Dale's =
book on audiovisual education?

How about speech training, where all teacher candidates were once =
required to locate and to use the diaphragm to project one's voice, and =
to enunciate? What ever happened to "Rhythm Band" and "Four-part =
Harmony"? Where did the grocery store and puppet stage go? What ever =
happened to a "child's garden".

Who, today, declares both a "major" and "minor" field of study in one's =
undergraduate work? What happened to university "demonstration schools", =
and the "master teacher" program. Did the "Specialist" credential go the =
way of the city and county subject matter specialist "Supervisor"? Where =
are the "generalist/specialists"?

What ever happened to elocution, and the art of poetry? Who speaks in =
prose or reads with a depth of understanding, compassion, articulation, =
and with dramatization? Who plays the piano? Who among us draws, paints, =
sings, acts, and performs in the classroom? Where did the models of =
culture go? Who is minding the store?
