Subject: painting plaster
I have been asked to repaint a 6' relief plaster sculpture of Jesus with his
disciples at the last supper. The paint is flaking off at this point. I
can probably sand off the old paint but an looking for advice as to what
kind of paint to use, finish is off, etc. Anyone with experience in this
matter. It is quite old. >>
Dear Sharon,
I have been asked to repair quite a few sculptures at our school. Seems like
Mary's nose always gets chipped over summer vacation in the closet or
something. Anyway...I usually start with an emery board, and file it smooth
again (aka Michael Jackson) so that the chunk is not so obvious. THen I have
used acrylic stencil paints (the country colors are easy to mix to get flesh
tones, etc.) and paint it right on. I usually don't seal it with anything.
My nose jobs and repairs have been holding up so far. Hope this helps.
