I also do something like this with my senior studio each year. My students
research their "favorite" painting and it's artist then create a life-sized
reproduction of the painting EXCEPT for the human in it. They costume and
make themselves up to fit into the painting and sit in tableau for an hour.
We put together a gallery guide and invite the public in to see our Living
Paintings. It is really cool and students can't wait until their senior year
to get to "perform" their painitng. We use the pink foam insulation that
comes in 4'x8' sheets as the backdrop- hinge them together and prime with
latex house paint. Last year (98-99) we had 15 painitngs on display in the
main lobby of the high school. It was cool!!
