Artie,
The pilgrims and others who came here fleeing religious persecution, were
seeking freedom of religion for themselves not anyone else. They usually
enacted the same types of laws they fled, only outlawing those who they fled
and other "pagans". Even after the revolution, Articles of Confederation,
the Constitution, and Federal Bill of Rights it was illegal in many states
to celebrate Christmas (considered a pagan ritual) or to practice certain
religions including Catholicism. While some States' Bill or Rights preceded
the Federal version other states waited years before adopting their own bill
of rights to protect freedom religious and secular.

And to think this nation was founded by people who wanted to escape from
religious persecution!
The right to believe must include the right not to believe or its not a
right
at all.IMHO
