teaching about religion

"With regard to the education of our children about the world they live
and considering, as you say, that Buddhism is one of the world's largest
religions, wouldn't you say that our children would be better off (at
of a survival advantage? In business, politics, living with others) if
knew something about this religion?"



I agree with this, and to add to it, with an ever-shrinking world due to
the internet and foreign policies, don't you think it would be a good
idea to teach students about ALL major world religions including
Buddhism, Islam, Shinto, Judaism, and yes, even Christianity? Considering
much of human intolerance comes from a lack of understanding of a
person's culture, I hardy think that we could even begin to pat ourselves
on our educational backs if we gloss over (or worse, skip entirely) this
major area of human existance. It is possible to teach about religion
and spirituality to students without preaching dogma. And if a student
discovered a new path of thinking or way of being that gave him or her
inner peace, I would hardly consider that a travesty. Especially when so
many young people today (and old people for that matter too) seem so lost
in the vastness of their existance.

I dont see what is wrong with posting the Ten Commandments, the Pillars
of Islam, quotes by Confucious, or the philosophies of Buddha. Should we
teach any as doctrine? No. But to deny that religion plays a part in the
lives of a vast number of the humans who reside on this planet is even
more backwards looking than banning the teaching of evolution.

And just to get this peeve off my chest, Charles Darwin never intended
for the theory of evolution to disprove the existance of God. It seems
like whenever the issue of evolution comes up it turns into a religion
vs. science battle. From what I had learned, Darwin was himself a
Christian. It's a shame that some school systems are so blinded by
either their anti-evolution or anti-religion lobbies that they can't find
a reasonable ground in the middle where the theory of evolution AND the
philosophies of major world religions can co-exist in the educational
