I hope I haven't said this before, but on the first day I hand out written
class rules and discuss them briefly (I'm thinking about changing this) I
stress that we will not make fun of each other or ourselves,
then I hand out paper and pencils if the darlings didn't think they might
need one on the first day of school !!(not good ones--old colored pencils
I find when we clean out the lockers in June) The assignment is to" draw
me and that's all I'm going to say." They immediately get the pucker
factor up and ask about 50 questions--which way do we turn the paper, your
whole body or just your head, do we have to draw you in that pose (I sit
hunched over with my face covered with my hands), how big, are we being
graded, will you hate me if I make you look fat and middle aged etc. I
mumble
through my hands, today you are on your own--you can draw me anyway you
like, normally I'm going to give you more information than you can stand
but today is your big chance to do it your way. Since they are under a
lot of pressure they tend to remember this experience really clearly so
that when we talk about , say picking a good view of the subject, or using
a viewfinder to get a good composition etc. I can refer back to the first
day, and they have to keep their first day drawing of me in their folders
to use as a basis of comparison to the rest of their work. Sid
