Real Life Art

In response to the problem of kids who dislike school and art, I have found
that even those students who don't care for art will get into it if they are
asked to put their own thoughts into it. As others have written, whatever
allows them to express their individuality helps, and I've noticed they don't
leave that work in the classroom for me to throw away, either, which is where
their still lifes and such often end up. Some projects they have enjoyed:
personal logos, allegorical paintings that tell about an event or situation
in their life (I like to show them Emil Nolde's "Sunflowers in a Windstorm"
to teach them about allegory), and designing a self-portrait CD cover. I let
them use photos if they want, it could be a collage, and they can have fun
making up the name of the band (as long as they are a member!), but it has to
have good design and it has to reveal something interesting about themselves.
Most of the kids would go ahead and make liner notes, and stick it in a jewel
case from home. Have also had them design the movie poster or book jacket
design for a movie or book about their lives or about an event they remember.

I think many of the students you have described have a strong distaste for
"following the rules." Sometimes allowing them to make a big exception to
the way the assignment is spelled out helps them to feel ownership of the
project. Being quick to praise them for being creative rather than penalizing
them for doing it "wrong" might win some kids over.
