I was fortunate to receive a $2900 grant last year from our local arts
council and have just completed the application for this year. Request
materials, tools, books, reproductions, CD-ROMS that will be used
directly by the students. I have not found a grant yet that will pay
for permanent fixtures, furniture, or anything that would be considered
an asset for the school. This grant pays for things such as large
looms, but I haven't tried asking for a kiln because we do not have the
space. Just be honest and let them know that you are doing this for the
benefit of the students. There are various sources on the internet that
offer tips for grant writing, some require a fee. While you are at it
and doing all of the work for this grant, try to find some other grants
that will require the same basic information; I found many in your area
of the country. I think I read that you have to apply for 8 grants for
every one you receive. But it is definitely worth the effort; last
year's grant funded three visiting artists and most of our materials for
the entire year.
