Hi art people,
The need for external controls depends very much on the age,
population, and administration in your school. Hopefully, the teacher can
gradually relinquish discipline responsibilities and most children will
exercise self control most of the time. However--In my district, some
schools just a few miles apart have very different needs relating to
discipline/consequences. I don't think creativity flourishes in chaos.
When children feel a sense of personal safety and self responsiblity
they can stretch academically and artistically. They must know the
parameters, and that if self discipline fails, adults are there as
a safety net to protect them and others.
