so true betty- my own artwork has improved considerably since i started
teaching art. as you mentioned, it really helps your creativity breathing in
the electricity of middle-schoolers (its summer i forget how tiring they are
too!). they inspire me.
on the other side, i have also worked with teachers who were hired on their
personal artistic credit. true they are great artists, but not teachers. i
know one in particular that spends the day creating his own art, with school
supplies. wonderful as the art work may be, the kids suffer. he believes
that when he is painting (during class time) the students will be inspired
and create on their own. this is not teaching as far as i am concerned, but
he'd tenured!
