As so many of us struggle with integrating national, state, and local
standards into our curricula, they can in fact be helpful. A teacher in
my district taught about a particular religion within the context of her
curriculum, and some parents went bananas. When the teacher showed and
explained the standards that were being addressed, the parents'
complaints were no longer valid. The teacher could continue with her
work, and the kids were required to remain in the classroom.
