I give awards at the end of the year in a school wide assembly. My school does
not require me to but the students expect it because of the others. I make it
clear at the beginning of the year and as I give out the awards that neither
grades nor awards are given for talent. I give the awards to very good
students who always do their very best work, come prepared to learn, and are
willing to take risks. And I am generous with the awards. I don't even tie it
to behavior. Because sometimes some of my most tiring students are also among
my best students. they just can't always be quiet or still when I want them
to. We will have seniors for the first time next year (we're a new school) and
at that time I will give an award to a student majoring in art chosen by the
other art majors for an outstanding high school career. The one they expect to
see great things from. I usually give an engraved silver cup. I also sing
their praises thoughout the year whenever I can. I think it helps to give good
feelings.
