Art awards

Dear Colleagues,

I asked this question earlier, as part of another letter. I didn't really
get any responses to this particular part, so I'm going to try again. I
hope you don't mind!

Each year, during the "Moving On" (to middle school) ceremony for our fifth
graders, we give certificates for all sorts of achievements, academic, band,
physical education, etc. It has been suggested that I give awards for art
achievement. I'm not sure how I feel about this, or what criteria I would
use. I don't like to set up a competitive environment in the art room...and
I can think of some (perfectionist) students who would turn off if they did
not meet the criteria and would not get the award.

I'd like your opinions about whether you think these awards are a good idea
(or not), and if yes, what criteria would you use?

Sincerely,
Leah
