Original work

Hi all,
In the recent discussion regarding the Scholastic competition,
people were concerned about the originality of work.
A number of famous artists have used other works of art for their work
(with some changes) or incorporated it into a work of art - for example
Lichtenstein. My question is this- How do some of you explain this to
your students? We don't want students to copy, but others have made big
bucks of doing it? I'm just sincerely curious how some of you have
handled this?
