Sal,
I require my K-5th graders (and 6th & 9-12 this year!) to check with 3
people at their table to see "What could I do to make this better?"
BEFORE they come to me and say "I'm done." They know that when they
come to me I am going to make suggestions and they will have to go back
and add things so they just go ahead and ask someone. I am at a new
school this year, but at my old school the kids knew and would train any
newbies. I still had some early finishers but quite a few less than
before I started this. Also, a word of caution on "early finisher"
boxes & activities: If the activity is really cool, they will rush even
more to get to do it first. You might want to put up a poster that
says: "What to Do When I'm Done" and list some quiet, self-directed
activities that can be done with clean supplies (ie: crayons, markers
and paper, rather than paint, etc). A good resource is the internet.
Kenroar's Incredible art dept has great, quickie lesson plans (not all
are quicky but could be adapted) that you could print out and leave in
the "box"...

Good luck!
