Fees

In our district it has been decided that it is illegal to charge students any
kind of fees. We can't even charge the fees that we charged all students at
the beginning of the year. That covered a lot of things such as ID's,
handbooks, etc. Not only that we cannot charge for the academic planner we
like for each student to use. Needless to say this decision was passed down
too late to plan for a way to fund these items. I think it is wonderful that
we are trying to give our students a free education but I think we need to
remember that the right to a free education is not in the US constitution as
so many believe. The only place one finds any reference to education is in
state constitutions. I think that many parents would not argue with paying a
reasonable fee to provide quality that is difficult to provide with the money
from the usual resources. I know I prefer it to students and teachers using so
much time on fund raisers. That time could be better spent on learning related
tasks.

Of course this reminds me that our dept. needs to plan our fund raiser and get
started on that right away.
